9th International Bio-Fluid Mechanics and Vascular Mechano-Biology Symposium

The University of Arizona Health Sciences Innovation Building serves as the venue for the 9th International Bio-Fluid Mechanics and Vascular Mechano-Biology Symposium (2020 Biofluids Congress), Feb. 13-16.

“This is a long-standing meeting, conducted every three years, brings together leading scientists, physicians and engineers related to all matters ‘Fluid’ in the body and biological systems. We have senior faculty, as well as students, presenting over a wide range of cutting-edge topics. And we are also honoring Professors Roger Kamm, PhD, of MIT, and David Elad, DSc, of Tel Aviv University, for their contributions to the field,” noted the UArizona’s Marvin Slepian, MD (at right), who is serving as a chair for the event as well as the organizing committee.

“This is a high profile event that I am proud we could organize and host at University of Arizona, as it’s just another of the forward-looking ‘Wonder’ activities ongoing here!” added Dr. Slepian, who list of titles includes Regents’ Professor of medicine, medical imaging (College of Medicine – Tucson), materials science and engineering, chemical and environmental engineering (College of Engineering); associate department head, biomedical engineering, College of Engineering; McGuire Scholar, Eller College of Management; member, Sarver Heart Center and BIO5 Institute; and director of the Arizona Center for Accelerated BioMedical Innovation (ACABI).

In addition to the UArizona Health Sciences, the event is hosted by ACABI, the BIO5 Institute and College of Engineering

The 70th birthdays of both Dr. Kamm and Dr. Elad (at right) are being celebrated at the conference. Dr. Kamm, the Cecil and Ida Green Distinguished Professor of Biological and Mechanical Engineering at Boston’s Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was recently named the recipient of the 2020 Shu Chien Achievement Award by the Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering Special Interest Group of the Biomedical Engineering Society. The honor recognizes his many contributions to the field of cellular and molecular bioengineering over the past 35 years as evidenced by an h-index of 92 with 30,000 lifetime citations. Dr. Elad, a professor of biomedical engineering who also is a visiting scholar at Imperial College London, MIT, Columbia University, Northwestern, Drexel, Georgia Tech, University of Toronto and Japan’s Nagoya Institute of Technology, is among a team of bioengineers and gynecologists who announced development last summer of a model of the human uterine wall where embryos may be able to attach and grow.
