Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology Seminar Series

Tue, 02/18/2020 - 4:00pm

SPEAKER:
Gabriel Lander, PhD | Professor, Department of Integrative Structural and Computational Biology, The Scripps Research Institute – California Campus, La Jolla, Calif.

TOPIC:

“The Highs and the Lows of Cryo-EM, and Exploring Cellular Machines of Mass Destruction”

Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology Seminar Series
Tuesday, February 18, 2020 | 4 p.m.
Health Sciences Innovation Building, HSIB Room 880

About this presentation:
Technical and methodological advances in single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) have expanded the technique into a resolution regime that was previously only attainable by X-ray crystallography.

Join Dr. Gabriel Lander as he describes his efforts to push the size and resolution limits of this methodology using microscopes that are millions of dollars cheaper than the highest-end instruments. He uses this methodology to study quality control motors that regulate diverse aspects of cellular biology through specialized protein degradation.

Through structure determination and biochemistry, he and his team have established a structural framework to understand how different members of the AAA+ motor superfamily achieve specialized, diverse biological functions.

This seminar is hosted by Aikseng Ooi, PhD.
