Problems in Complex Disease Biology Spring Colloquium

Fri, 04/14/2017 - 9:00am to 11:00am

TOPIC: “Integrated Biology of Allergic Disease: At the Crossroads of Endocrine, Developmental and Immune Systems”
SPEAKER: Sergejs Bernikovs, PhD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Allergy and Immunology, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, Chicago

As promised, the final stretch of our colloquium will take a look at complex diseases from a genomic, systems biology perspective. This week's speaker, Dr. Sergejs Berdnikovs will rely on a powerful combination of bioinformatics and biology to discuss how hormones may affect immunity and allergic disease. His data are intriguing, his hypotheses are provocative, and his background in evolutionary biology gives a special flavor to his work. Friday’s lecture promises to be both interesting and somewhat unusual.

Dr. Berdnikovs earned his doctorate in biological science from the University of Cincinnati. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship in allergy and immunology at Northwestern’s Feinbeg School of Medicine in 2012. Among his recent articles he’s been an author on, one includes UA allergist Tara Carr, MD, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, as lead author: “Eosinophilic bioactivities in severe asthma” (World Allergy Organization Journal, June 2016).

This event is sponsored by the Arizona Center for the Biology of Complex Diseases at the University of Arizona, which is led by Director Donata Vercelli, MD, who is also a UA professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, associate director, UA Asthma and Airway Disease Research Center, and a member of the UA BIO5 Institute.
